Spinal cord

The spinal cord is a crucial extension of the brain, carrying nerves from the brainstem down to the lower back. Injury to this area results in paralysis beyond the point of injury because the connection with the brain is severed. Spinal cord injuries, contusions, fluid accumulation, and tumors require very careful surgical treatment.
