Nerves originating from the brain and brainstem are called cranial nerves, while those originating from the spinal cord and distributed throughout the body are called peripheral nerves. Nerves travel a long distance from the brainstem or spinal cord to reach their target organs. During this journey, they can be compressed by muscles, bones, or other tumors. They can be severed or crushed in traffic or motor vehicle accidents, injured by firearms, or damaged by sharp objects. Benign or malignant tumors can develop at any point along these long nerves. Various surgical procedures exist for all these nerve diseases.
